Are water pitchers effective?

Many people use water pitcher instead of water filter because of its portability and price. However, is water pitcher as effective as normal water filter? Can water pitcher really remove harmful contaminant from water, or is it just a hype?

In order to answer these questions, you have to look into your cartridge in your water pitcher first.
Cartridge is the most important part in water pitchers. Cartridge can decide what contaminant can be removed, so choose a water pitcher based on its cartridge first.Even though most of the water pitchers claim to reduce hardness in the water, their ability to soften the water varies.

Next, check if your water pitcher uses "low-sodium" ion exchange resin. The function of ion exchange resin is to remove heavy metals such as lead, iron, mercury, arsenic, and remove calcium and magnesium ions from water, which is commonly known as "tea scale".
However, it should be noted that when the resin is exchanged in water, it absorbs heavy metals and tea scales, and releases sodium ions. Drinking more of these water can cause cardiovascular disease, so that is why we should choose a "low sodium" ion exchange resin filter to avoid negative effect.

Also, water pitcher is not completely sealed so cartridges can easily become the hotbed of bacteria. Check if it is using “silver-loaded” coconut shell activated carbon. Why does activated carbon contain silver? By adding this process, it can prevent bacteria from growing. However, the cost of this process is higher so some water pitch may not have this process.
