How to treat hard water and prevent scale deposit

If you find that there is a lot of scale in your kitchen, sink or bathroom basin, it is because the hardness of your water may be too high. Hard water will cause scale buildup and clog your pipeline. Not only that, hard water can also lead to several problems including damage to hair and skin.

How to identify if your water is hard water or soft water?
Water hardness is measured in "grains" per gallon, in milligrams of calcium (Ca) per liter, or parts per million, and German Degrees of Hardness (dH). You can take a water sample to a water test lab to have its hardness measures.

  • Soft water: 0 - 60 mg total hardness in 1 liter
  • Moderate soft water:  60 - 120 mg total hardness in 1 liter
  • Hard water: 120 - 180 mg total hardness in 1 liter
  • Very hard water: more than 180 mg total hardness in 1 liter
The most suitable hardness for human body usually range from 50-150mg per liter.

How to soften hard water?
Hard water can be softened by reducing the concentration of calcium, magnesium and other minerals. One of the common method to soften the water is through ion exchange. "Ion exchange" means that when a water filter is used, the substance in the resin and the mineral in the water will be exchanged for billions of times, and metal cations such as calcium, magnesium and aluminum will be adsorbed on the resin to release sodium ions. After filtration, the content of calcium and magnesium in the water will decrease. When the amount of adsorption of the resin is saturated, it is soaked in sodium (salt brine). At the same time, the originally adsorbed calcium and magnesium are released, and the sodium ions are adsorbed.
Even though ion exchange method can soften hard water, it does not filter out other pollutants in the water such as organic pollutants, microorganisms, and suspended particles. Therefore, the ionic resin can only be used for the first or second stage of water purifier. In general, ion exchange resins have limited service life for about 2-3 months (depending on water quality). The shortcomings of the ion exchange resin, in addition to its short service time and slightly higher unit price, is it releases sodium during the ion exchange process, which poses a health risk to kidney patients. You can also choose sodium-free ion exchange resin, but the water quality filtered by sodium-free resin will be acidic due to the release of hydrogen ions from the filter material.
In addition to ion exchange, RO(reverse osmosis) system is also a good choice to soften your water. When water molecules pass through RO membrane, it can filter out heavy metal, organic matters and bacteria in the water; but the disadvantage is that after the water is treated by reverse osmosis, there will be wastewater discharge.
