Is water filter necessary? 3 easy steps to decide

With the increase of environmental pollution and the improvement of people's quality of life, more and more people are paying attention to the issue of clean water. But many people are wondering if it is necessary to install a water filter at home. Here are three easy steps for you to decide if you need a water filter at home.

First step: Know what is in your water
If you want to know the quality of your home, fill a glass with water and wait until it is still. If the you can directly see that there is sediment in the water with your own eyes, it means that the sediment exceeds the standard and is harmful to health.
In addition, if you can smell the bleach in your water, indicating that the residual chlorine in the water exceeds the standard. I often boil water at home and found there is a layer of yellow or white scale on the inner wall of the kettle. This means the hardness of the water is too high. Drinking such water often can cause gallstone disease.
The condition of your house can also determine the need to install a water purifier. Old houses usually equip with old water pipeline and the water tank are likely to corrode and accumulate impurities. Therefore, the water that reaches your home through these old pipe is very likely to contain harmful substances such as heavy metals, inorganic substances, suspended particles, microorganisms and even chemical agents. These substances cannot be removed even if the water is boiled.
For more precise information, you can either test your water yourself or get a copy of your area's annual water quality report from your water utility. If you want to test your water by yourself, you can easily find a test kit in home improvement store. Otherwise, you can send your water to a local lab to know what's in your water.

Second step: Know the water filter cartridge
The effect of water filter depends directly on the quality of the water filter cartridge. According to the filtration accuracy, the water purifier can be easily divided into microfiltration, ultrafiltration and RO reverse osmosis. The general water filter can only remove the sediment, chlorine, rust, viruses, bacteria, etc., but they cannot remove pesticide residues and heavy metal.
The reverse osmosis(RO) water filter is currently wildly used in purification technology. The RO membrane can filter out more than 99% of the pollutants in the water including pesticide, heavy metal, colloids, bacteria, viruses and other harmful substances.

Third step: Choose a water filter based on contaminants in your water

Based on your water results, there can be some different situation. If your water does not contain too much harmful contaminants such as lead , Fluoride and chlorine, then you do not necessarily have to install a water filter. On the contrary, if you do have these contaminants in your water, then it is very important to install a water filter system,  because they can cause many disease. Different water filters have their functions, and their contaminants removal ability are different. Maintenance should be carried out regularly to effectively exert its water purification function.
